I appreciate your kindness!
Odds are, if you are looking to get me a gift, you have already had a positive effect on me and for that I am grateful. I am fortunate enough to be at a point in my life where I don’t want for necessities; food, shelter, and health care are things that I no longer worry about lacking. It’s unfortunate that others do not have the same basic needs met, it is one of the injustices that I have dedicated my life to reducing.
Because I don’t need these things, in lieu of purchasing something for me I would instead prefer you donate to one of the organizations below. You can do so in your name or mine if you would like, I am most concerned about contributing to improving the outcome of helping others who desperately need it.
Give Directly focuses on reducing extreme poverty. Studies show that donations of physical items, including food, do not have nearly the same impact as direct monetary donations. Give Directly funds the poor and enables them to build a sustainable path out of poverty, 88 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the recipients setting a difficult to reach standard for other philanthropic efforts.
Give Directly is also working to test Universal Basic Income to reduce poverty, a project I contribute to and believe in, and you can donate to that project specifically here:
Health care is a serious topic with many people unable to afford basic care. Women are often in need of this disproportionately, Planned Parenthood has a strong history of providing services for low income women (and men!) who are unable to afford it themselves. They are also active in helping reduce the disparity in health care opportunities for women, I strongly encourage donations to help them continue to provide to those in need.
American Association of University Women (AAUW)
One of the most powerful ways to improve a society and reduce injustice is through the empowerment of women, especially in reducing the pay gap and increasing educational opportunities. The AAUW works tirelessly to reduce barriers for women’s economic and educational needs. Their projects, donations, and workshops help provide the skills necessary for women to be successful.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Bill and Melinda gates have dedicated an incredible amount of resources toward reducing disease, improving education, and empowering women. Their work has had an effect on multiple scales both in developing and developed countries, and they continue to aggressively push innovation solutions in reducing injustice.
